Yesterday...

Apologies on yesterday's spot that NEVER happened! No, you're not deaf, mistaken, or stupid, I did say 7:20 as that was when I was told. However due to nothing but terrible news that would be rudely broken up with my spoof on an issue or due to a lack of time to fit everything in my spot got pushed back to this morning. I wasn't told of this so I missed it too :( . What can you do though right??

Anyway I hope you enjoyed the ones you did hear and if you'd like to hear them all or chat with the Giving It Up Girl (me) then shoot me an e-mail or check out my site.

This Morning

I was on CBC again this morning..but I didn't know when I was going to be aired because Peter has been out of the office for a while. I listened from 7-8 but apparently (according to my prof. Kim) I played at 8:20ish. I thought maybe they would play me right after the piece about addiction which aired just before 8. Did you know that 1 in 10 British Columbians suffer from addiction or some sort of dependance?

Me and Peter at CBC

On Monday I was on air again, but I don't know what time I was actually played at... I really need to talk to Peter about the time and if they are going to vary each week. It's not a big deal but I would sort of like to hear myself and be able to have others hear me too!

On another note: I got my second letter from CBC today. The first was just a copy of the contract which was saddening because I thought it was a cheque! Oh well I now have been officially paid as a freelance contributor for CBC. Pretty cool if you ask me. Too bad the money is just going to savings. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And last but not least I was finally able to get another interview in for my major. I'm really happy about how this one went as he was a great answer and didn't drag on for too long despite having a lot to say. He, you'll find out later who, is a very accomplished individual and I was very impressed with everything he's done. I was also glad to ACTUALLY be able to meet up with him as I've had a few cancellations on interviews and people who were unable to speak with me due to company policy. Everything is piecing together now, YAY!

Off to PG

Friday morning I woke up at 5am to meet at the Mayfair parking lot so that I could board the bus on my adventure to Prince George for the WRCUP conference. The WRCUP is a newspaper conference held for students in post-secondary across British Columbia and is provided as a networking/learning experience for everyone in attendance. Speakers come in all day and you choose which seminars you want to attend so you can learn what’s most relevant to you when it comes to your writing. Since I like photography and arts and culture I tend to lean towards those rather than investigative reporting, although I’ve been to some of those at other conferences and depending on the speaker they can actually be pretty good. Anyways, that’s what up to for the weekend – allowing at least 26 hours for traveling :S Yay! I'll post some pictures later.

I was looking forward to it as I was able to see some family up there whom I haven't seen in ages. We ended up going out for dinner at a nice looking restaurant...with sub par over priced food. My cousin also came out and hung out with us a bit afterwards too. The only downfall of the trip was that there was some school work that I could have been tending to at the same time. (oh well I'll make up for it this week)

So to make this whole blurb relevant I’ll relate it to my column and the fact that I have, as you know, taken it to the next level and turned it into an audio blog with CBC as well. Two have been aired now, but I missed the last one because I thought they were playing it at 7:40ish again but instead they pretty much decided to lead off the morning show with it and aired it at 6:15! I wonder when it will be on next week.... So my mom and I missed it but Andy, Will and Doug tuned in! Why Will was up at the time god knows. I was on again this morning giving up MONEY but I don't know what time they aired me again. I really need to talk to Peter about this.

On another note I have now filmed one of the interviews for my major as well as part of my video-blog. I’ll keep you posted on the process of the two and other updates on my major project.

Problem

This blogger sucks and I can't seem to just add audio but I can add video...how ridiculous. So you can listen live from the link I added to the left of this or you can wait until I put the audio clips on my website which there is also a link to on the left but a bit lower. That way you can check out my cool website too :)
Did you hear me??? I sounded exactly like I thought I would sound like...a dork. I liked the music bed that they laid underneath it though and I'm wondering if they'll use that same one each time or if they'll mix it up. I guess we'll find out next Monday! It's pretty cool to be on the radio - and to be getting paid to be a "star" to boot :P Okay so I'm not a full blown celeb yet but who knows maybe one day; a girl can wish right. I liked how they introed my piece beforehand it almost made me miss radio and producing features for Village 900...almost being the key word there. This is a bit less stressful for me. I did stress a bit though when 7:40 rolled around and they weren't playing my piece...then 7:45...and 7:50. THEN ME! So weird having them edit my audio. Anyways I'm going to link the audio clip on here when I get it so in the meantime hold tight...and listen next week!

On another note, having nothing to do with CBC, I've been working on the other aspects of my major including trying to get some good video interviews which is proving to be not quite as easy as I thought it would be. People are either a) not returning my calls or b) under their corporation's rules not allowed to discuss their practise. Boooo.
However I do have a few leads so I should be alright. I think I'll be chatting with someone who's overcome an addiction as well as a psychologist. I may also decide to interview someone else but I'll keep you posted on what I decide and if I find anyone suitable to my project.

3 Down - 3 To Go

I went down to CBC to do my first set of recording finally. When I got there before we did anything I showed Peter the three that I had revamped so far and he approved. YAY! :) I'm not sure what I would have done if he hadn't as I wasn't really anticipating that but I'm guessing it would involve some quick on the spot editing of my articles. After that I gave them my details (so I can get paid) and signed a contract as a freelance contributor. Unfortunately I'm not getting paid as much as he originally said but in the guidebook it says I'm getting the right rate. Besides it's more for the experience and exposure anyways.
So yeah we hop into the studio and set up the mic, etc... Peter sets himself up in the adjacent office and after I put on my headphones I can hear what he's saying from the other room. He tells me to go ahead so we can test volume levels and after a few tweaks of the mic we're good to go. A sip of some water and a "cough cough" to clear the throat (for added effect - I'm a paid professional now :P ) get me ready to rock and I start voicing over the first one. After two takes of each article we finished up in about 1/2 hour. Man I hammed it up for parts of them. I didn't stumble too much on my words which was good. It's a lot easier when you're reading your own writing.

The three I recorded during this session were hot water, caffeine and money. I haven't decided yet what I'll do next time but I finished the third one today saying I was giving up the internet so that will have to be one. All and all today was a success ending with a friendly "see you later when you have the others re-vamped". He said he'd like to have me in next week so I better get cracking. If only I didn't have school and work too! Or just didn't need to sleep...maybe I should give that up. HAH!

To the Studio I go

I've re-vamped three articles to be recorded for CBC so I called Peter up and I'm going in on Monday. This is cool...I wonder when I'm gonna be on the air and how dumb I'm going to sound?? Kim pretty much made it clear that I am NOT cut out for radio...and I couldn't agree more.

I guess we'll find out pretty soon. I'm so glad I won't have to do any editing of the audio!

So little time in the day..

So I'm trying to find time between school work, classes and work to re-write my columns so I can go back to CBC. Yesterday I spent some time working on them but I'm finding it really hard to re-edit my columns that have been already edited by my editor. 500 words is not enough! I feel like I'm cutting out the whole point but I did manage to get a few down to just over 500. I stil need to work on some though but I have a few that are just about ready to be recorded down at CBC...or at least given to Peter to see what he thinks.

The Meeting

I met up with Michael Tymchuk who handed me over to Peter Hutchinson, the Station Manager. We chatted and tossed ideas around and settled on a series of 3 minute pieces to be aired in the morning (probablybetween 7 and 8) on a weekly basis.

My next job was to re-edit some of my columns down to about 500 words and without any swear words or time references, like in my booze one which focused largely around the holidays. Then I was supposed to give him a ring and come see him again and we'd talk about doing some recording in the studio there.

I was also promised a little bit of extra pocket cash for my work (bonus!) as a freelance contributor. Life is good. Although this is just one more thing to add to the agenda...and the list goes on.

Next step...

When I got back from the conference I hopped on the computer and e-mailed Michael over at CBC. He responded saying that he read my edition of Giving It Up (the booze episode) and really enjoyed it. His thoughts were of producing a short radio journal for the morning show. And my thoughts were.."Hell yeah!" Kelly Marion, the Giving it Up girl..who would've thought I'd be a radio star! :) Okay so thats a bit far-fetched but it's a step in the right direction in getting my name out there and as someone looking to go into communications it's all about who you know, and who knows you. At that point we decided to meet up the following week to discuss finer details.

CBC

So I'm away at a newspaper conference in Saskatoon when I get news from my editor that CBC is interested in my column. Interested..hmmm what does that mean anyways? And how could my column really lead to anything? I'd like to think that I'm a decent writer when I try but the context of my column doesn't really highlight my best material. Oh well, it still sounds pretty cool to me. Michael Tymchuk at CBC knows that I'm currently away and will be getting back to him when I get back. Until then I try not to think about it too much and soak in as much information as I can take in from this conference. Man they talk about blogging a lot... oh where technology has taken us!
